Focus Performance Test

Hi all,

Today entry it's about this tokina 28-80mm lens. It can be called obsolete lens as Tokina don't produce it anymore now. I bought this lens a second hand one from one of the famous photography forum in M'sia, PhotoMalaysia.com
There a lot of buy/sell photography stuff u can find there. with a very great bargain, u can get a 2nd hand lens/body/accessories with an affordable price.

I got some inspiration to wrote some performance test bout this lens from some of "homework" i've done before i purchase this lens. But i only concentrate on the focus performance of this lens. Some comparison been made of this lens with Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG from this website tawbaware.com. It can be seen clearly that Tokina overwhelmed the Sigma for the image sharpness. As been said from the website

In general, the Tokina produces sharp images at F5.6 and smaller apertures. The Sigma needs to be stopped down another stop or two to produce its best results. Even so, it never quite catches up to the Tokina in sharpness.

And with this lens in my hand, I have choose to test it and experience myself the image/sharpness of the lens itself. but before that, here some of picts of the lens.

So .. here the test, camera mounted on a tripod and timer been used to avoid any unnecessary shacking that will probably cause the image to blur.

Result

So.. the first one, the widest 28mm and the narrowest 80mm to be tested, f2.8-5.6

For 2nd test, for same aperture f2.8-5.6 with 35mm & 58mm

Conclusion

So to conclude this lens performance, this lens remarkably produce acceptable sharp image on f3.5 and above. Thus, to increase the image quality of this zoom lens, try not to fully zoom-in (80mm) nor zoom-out (28mm) to take a shot, give some tolerance to the maximum end-zoom by 10-20mm i.e 35mm-60mm only. It will noticeably the different of the image sharpness + Chromatic Abbreviation (CA) between this zooming range.
